OMED-OMEDAN – THE KISSING TRADITION OF BALI

love bali

Omed-Omedan is a unique tradition held one day after Nyepi, during Ngembak Geni, in Banjar Kaja, Sesetan, Denpasar.

This tradition involves young men and women (sekaa teruna) who symbolically pull and embrace each other in the middle of the crowd, accompanied by cheers from the community and splashes of water poured by residents. The term omed-omedan literally means “pulling each other,” symbolizing togetherness, closeness, and the spirit of unity among the younger generation.

Beyond being a moment of social gathering after Nyepi, Omed-Omedan carries philosophical values representing harmony and balance in community life. This tradition has become a distinctive cultural attraction, enriching the series of Balinese New Year celebrations in Bali.
